Hi, I’m Lena, 25, studying Management in my Master's in Germany, and I decided to skip the plane and take the train all the way to Bologna for my Erasmus. I wanted to start my Erasmus sustainably, so I skipped the airport chaos and went for the slow route. In the end, it was not only greener, but also cheaper and way less stressful (no security lines, no “will my luggage make it?” panic). I had to take several regional trains, as well as an intercity express train "ICE" and an international train "RegioJet", which took me directly from Munich to Bologna. Instead of rushing through airports, I had the chance to slowly realise I’m actually going abroad for months. That hit me in a good way. Also, I was able to pretend to be the main character while looking out of the window. Watching mountains, lakes and cities like Verona and Trento roll by the window felt like a sneak peek of places I now want to visit during my Erasmus. To any student considering travelling sustainably: try the train at least once. You’ll save a lot of emissions, skip the stress at the airport security and actually enjoy the journey, while watching movies, reading books or just looking out of the window. The hours aren’t wasted, they’re filled with views, thoughts and tiny moments (like the snacks offered from the family next to you) that make the experience richer.
